Description of the role: We’re seeking a Payroll & Finance Officer to join our internal Finance team on a 12-month contract (parental leave cover). This is a part‑time role (30 hours per week across 5 days) based in the CBD, reporting to the Finance Manager. In this role, you’ll lead end-to-end payroll processing, ensuring accurate, timely payments, full compliance with payroll obligations, and prompt resolution of queries. You’ll also support month-end finance processes, reporting, and controls.
What makes you ‘just right’:
- Demonstrated experience managing end-to-end payroll in a medium to large organisation.
- Strong knowledge of Australian payroll legislation, including PAYG, superannuation, payroll tax, and leave entitlements.
- Advanced Excel skills and hands-on experience with payroll systems.
- High attention to detail with strong analytical, problem-solving, and stakeholder communication skills.
- Proficient in accounting and payroll platforms such as Excel, Xero, and ePayroll (or similar systems).
Desirable, not but essential:
- Relevant qualification in payroll, accounting, or finance (e.g., Certificate IV or Diploma in Payroll Administration).
- Membership with, or affiliation to, the Australian Payroll Association.
- Experience supporting finance functions, including month-end processing and reconciliations.
What your day might look like:
Payroll (Primary Focus)
- Manage end-to-end payroll (monthly and ad hoc), ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely payments.
- Process payroll changes including new starters, leavers, salary updates, allowances, bonuses, and leave.
- Perform and review manual calculations (e.g., terminations and adjustments) and maintain accurate payroll records and systems.
Finance Support
- Assist with month-end close, including payroll journals, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Maintain payroll-related general ledger entries and review weekly payment runs.
- Support cashflow forecasting and preparation of management reports.
Compliance & Improvement
- Support statutory reporting (PAYG, superannuation, payroll tax, BAS/IAS, FBT, Workers Compensation, WGEA).
- Assist with audits and contribute to continuous improvement of payroll and finance processes and controls.
